Scope and Content Aerial view of Linlithgow Palace and the town of Linlithgow, West Lothian This aerial view shows the town of Linlithgow, c.19km west of Edinburgh. In c.1138 it was created a royal burgh by David I who had a royal manor house built here in the 12th century on the site now occupied by Linlithgow Palace (centre of photograph). The Palace had five main building phases: 1424-37 (north, east and south ranges); 1437-88 (west range); 1488-1513 (west range); 1534-41 (alterations); and 1618-24 (north range rebuilt). The State (now Historic Scotland) took it into its care in 1874. Next to the Palace is the Parish Church of St Michael. Rebuilt between the late 15th and mid-16th century, its crown steeple was removed in 1821 because it was unsafe. No replacement was added until Geoffrey Clarke's stylised aluminium crown of 1964.
