Scope and Content Aerial view of Pultney and Wick Harbour, Wick, Highland Wick Harbour's Inner Harbour was constructed by George Burn in 1808, but reconstructed by Thomas Telford in 1824-31. The Outer Harbour was begun in 1862-7 and completed in 1882-7 when piers were also built across the Wick River to create the River Basin. The area around the harbour was christened Pultneytown after Sir William Pultney, Governor of the British Fisheries Society. At the top of the picture, from left to right, are the river Basin, the Inner Harbour, and the Outer Harbour. Wick, a royal burgh since 1589, remained a small town until after 1801 when Thomas Telford planned the harbour and new town on behalf of the British Fisheries Society. By the middle of the 19th century, Wick was Europe's largest herring port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
