Scope and Content Aerial view of harbour area of Peterhead, Grampian Originally called Keithinch, Peterhead was created a burgh of barony in 1587 by the Earls Marischal who also established the town's first harbour around this time. During the 17th century the town grew up around the harbour as a prosperous fishing port. New piers were built during the 18th century as Peterhead developed a burgeoning whaling industry. Thomas Telford and John Rennie built the North Harbour and a dry dock in 1818-22, and further improvements followed in 1837, 1849 and 1855. As this aerial photograph shows, Peterhead is still a thriving fishing port. Associated industries have set up around the harbour, including a fish-processing factory, along with some oil-related industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
