Scope and Content Aerial view of Kellie Castle, Fife, from south This photograph shows the castle and its gardens. The T-shaped plan of the castle can be made out, with the gardens entered from the rear of the building. The walled garden dates from the 17th century, but was restored and laid out by members of the Lorimer family, including the famous architect Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929). The Lorimer family held the castle until 1970, when it was purchased by The National Trust for Scotland (NTS). Sir Robert Lorimer's son, the sculptor Hew Lorimer (1907-93) remained at the castle as The National Trust for Scotland's representative and wrote a guidebook and history of Kellie. Kellie Castle is situated 4km north of St Monans, near the Fife coast. The history of the castle can be traced back to the 14th century, when the lands of Kellie belonged to the Siward, and then the Oliphant, families. The oldest parts of the building date from the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 1870s, the castle was leased by the family of Professor James Allan Lorimer (1818-90), who restored and improved the castle and grounds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
