Scope and Content Aerial view of Culross, Fife Culross became a burgh of barony dependent on the nearby Cistercian abbey in 1490. The abbey's coal-mines passed to Sir George Bruce in 1575. In 1592, his friend, King James VI, turned Culross into a royal burgh with a monopoly on iron scone-girdles. The medieval abbey is in the centre of the top-right quarter of the photograph. The early 17th-century town-house in the middle left can be recognised by its central tower, an 18th-century addition. Beyond the block to its left is Culross Palace.
