Scope and Content Approach to Swanston Village, Edinburgh, from the north The tiny village of Swanston lies close to the southern boundary of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills, surrounded by small wooded areas and open farmland. It is one of Edinburgh's most picturesque villages, and is now a conservation area. The village, sheltering under the distinctive scree slopes of Caerketton Hill, is screened from view on all sides by high trees. It is approached from the north by Swanston Road, which runs south from Oxgangs Road, near Hunter's Tryst in Edinburgh. The great landmark between the village and the slopes of Caerketton Hill is the 'T' wood, laid out by Henry Trotter of Mortonhall in 1766. Although seen as T-shaped from Edinburgh, it has the shape of a Maltese cross when viewed from above. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
