Scope and Content Redhall Mill, Colinton, Edinburgh Redhall Mill, one of a series of mills once working on the Water of Leith, stands a short distance downstream from Colinton village. In 1718 it was used as a paper mill by William Hamilton of Little Earnock, and in 1750 it was converted to a barley mill. This stone-built mill stands at the water's edge beside a lade. The building fell into disuse in the early 20th century, but was converted sympathetically to housing in the late 1970s. The Water of Leith was an important working river, supplying power and water to such industries as bleach-works, dye-works, skinneries, and mills manufacturing paper, flour, snuff, spices and timber.
