Scope and Content No 7 Morningside Place, Morningside, Edinburgh Morningside Place, originally named Deuchar Street, is one of the earliest suburban streets in the area. It was laid out on the west side of Morningside Road by Robert Wright in 1823 for William Deuchar of Morningside House, the owner of the land. No 7, built c.1870, is set well back on the north side of the street. The bay windows, which have a splendid south-facing outlook across to the Pentland Hills, are characteristic of the Victorian era. No 7 was once the home of the sisters of Dr John Brown, author, and assistant to the distinguished Edinburgh surgeon, Professor James Syme, who lived nearby in Millbank House from 1842-70, in the 'lands of Canaan'.
