Scope and Content Pentland Cottage, No 21 Gillespie Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Gillespie Road, named after James Gillespie of Spylaw, was constructed c.1874 within the wooded parkland of Spylaw House on the south side of the Water of Leith. It formed the approach to Colinton railway station and the new bridge spanning the river. Pentland Cottage was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1895. The two white-harled gables, with gently curving roofs and connected by an open porch, command splendid views south across Colinton Dell towards the Pentland Hills. The architect, Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) is widely known for the many cottage-style houses he designed in Colinton. His first cottage was built in 1893 for his aunt, Miss Guthrie Wright, in Pentland Avenue, and started a fashion. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
