Scope and Content Laverockdale House, Dreghorn Loan, Colinton, Edinburgh, from the south Dreghorn Loan, until 1916 known simply as 'The Loan', runs directly south from Colinton village. In 1709 it was recorded as part of the common 'loan' or lane that gave the estate of Colinton access to its common grazing ground in the Pentland Hills. Laverockdale House, designed by Robert Lorimer in the style of a solid stone-built house of 17th-century Scotland, is a high severe building, in complete contrast to the many other houses he designed in Colinton with gently curving roofs and gables. Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929), described as the most brilliant Scottish architect of his time, worked mainly in the vernacular tradition, producing an original early 20th-century Scottish Baronial style, exemplified in Laverockdale House.
