Scope and Content Colinton Manse, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton Manse stands in the deep valley of the Water of Leith, on the south bank of the river. It was built in 1783, possibly incorporating part of an older building, to the north-east of St Cuthbert's Parish Church, and has several later additions. This plain two-storeyed house, with bay windows in its south front, and prominent chimneys, is surrounded by paths and lawns that stretch down to the river. The door was originally in the west wall of the house, facing the church. The house was originally built next to a snuff mill. The author, Robert Louis Stevenson, who, as a child, visited his grandfather, the Reverend Lewis Balfour at the manse, remembered there was always 'the sound of water and the sound of mills'.
