Scope and Content Muirend, No 33 Gillespie Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Gillespie Road, named after James Gillespie of Spylaw, was constructed c.1874 within the wooded parkland of Spylaw House on the south side of the Water of Leith as the approach to Colinton railway station and the new bridge spanning the river. Muirend was designed by the architect, Hippolyte Jean Blanc, in 1897, with later additions by John Butters of Ludlow in 1908. The villa, with large eaves and timber detail on the white-harled gable, has an interesting octagonal turret. In 1895 a writer described the village of Colinton as having 'changed a little but always for the better, a good many comfortable old-English looking houses having arisen upon its upper outskirts'.
