Scope and Content Colinton House (now Merchiston Castle School) from the north, Colinton Road, Colinton, Edinburgh Colinton House is a large villa which was built 1801-6 for Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, who bought the Colinton estate in 1800. It stands in parkland to the north of Colinton village, and became part of Merchiston Castle School in 1930. The original house, with a central portico flanked by twin Ionic columns, has single-floor wings on either side. In 1930 it was adapted as the school's science laboratory, with a further extension to the west, and an extra storey added to the west wing. Merchiston Castle School was originally housed in Merchiston Castle, a medieval tower-house, once the home of the mathematician, John Napier. Having outgrown the building in 1929, the school moved to new premises in the grounds of Colinton House. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
