Scope and Content Rear, Ritchie Cottage, Links Road, Earlsferry, Fife Earlsferry was the terminal for ferries across the Forth - mainly to North Berwick and Dirleton - during the Middle Ages. Accepted as a royal burgh in 1541, it was in decline by the 18th century, but revived as a seaside resort in the late 19th century. Ritchie Cottage was built it the 18th century. At the rear, a forestair leads to a first-floor entrance, indicating that the house was divided into two flats, or that there was a shop or store on the ground floor.
