Scope and Content Inner harbour, West Wemyss Harbour, West Wemyss, Fife West Wemyss harbour was established in 1621. The inner basin and its docks were constructed by J and A Leslie in 1872-3. The inner basin, seen here looking out towards the forth, was partially filled in during the mid 20th century. West Wemyss became a burgh of barony in 1551. Initially its economy was based on salt-making though it had a harbour by 1621. In the 19th century, the town became dominated by the coal industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
