Scope and Content Turkish Baths, Carnegie Centre, Dunfermline, Fife The Carnegie Centre was built in 1901-5 by Hippolyte J Blanc of Edinburgh as a sports centre and swimming pool. It was modified and extended by James Parr and Partners in 1979-84. The Turkish Baths are designed to in Orientalist style so that the bathers might feel that they were enjoying a taste of the exotic East. They were probably not in the original plans since the plaster moulding is Classical like the rest of the interior. 'Orientalist' is the term used for the work of Western artist, poets and writers portraying a romanticised and often decadent version of the Middle East owing more to the Arabian Nights than to reality.
