Scope and Content Copied from 'Itinerarium septentrionale' by Alexander Gordon, 1726. Titled: 'The Roman Sacellum of Mars Signifier, or Mars Ultor vulgarly call'd Arthurs-Oon'. 'T. Clark sc' RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN: The Roman temple known as Arthur's O'on stood in the grounds of Stenhouse. It survived until 1793, when it was demolished, despite being almost complete. Though not connected to a fort, the temple stood in sight of the Antonine Wall. This is a drawing of the temple done in 1726. It shows how complete the temple was only twenty years before it was demolished. Our knowledge of the site is now based on similar drawings and other antiquarian accounts. The building was almost certainly built by Roman legionaries. Early reports mention an altar inside, and a brass finger from a statue was found. It may have been dedicated to Victory.
