Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: ‘Shire: Fife. Place: Dysart. Building: The Towers – 31, Quality Street’. Photographer: ‘F.B.’ Date: ‘Aug 1963’ 1960s photograph of The Towers, East Quality Street, Dysart, Fife The Towers was originally built in 1589, the date inscribed over the entrance. Its design and construction is similar to that of rural tower-houses of the same period. This photograph was taken in the 1960s before the house was restored. The stair-tower at the far end of the main block gives the building an L-shaped plan. Dysart, a pre-existing settlement on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy, became a burgh of barony in 1510 and a royal burgh in 1533. Originally a salt-making centre, it grew into a thriving port for exporting coal and fish. It declined from the 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
