Building: Aberdeen Market' Photographer: 'G N' Date: 'July 1965' RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN: View of post-1882 market before demolition, Market Street, Aberdeen Originally a small settlement at the mouth of the Denburn, Aberdeen was created a royal burgh by David I between 1124 and 1153. With 19th-century agricultural improvements, the city's population doubled as workers flocked there for alternative employment. This shows the interior of Aberdeen Market. Built in 1840-2 to designs by Archibald Simpson, this market was over 100m long and had an arcaded upper gallery containing an extra row of shops. The roof was partly glazed to allow light into the vast space. The building suffered a serious fire in 1882, but was rebuilt afterwards. However, it was demolished in 1971 to make way for an extension to British Home Stores designed by Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall & Partners. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
