Scope and Content Aerial view of Aberdour Castle, Fife This is an aerial view from the west, taken in 1966, with the castle in the right foreground. The walled garden of the castle is to its left, and the area above the castle is the terraced south garden with its dovecot. Above the walled garden is the medieval parish church with its graveyard. The railway in the foreground is part of the Forth Bridge Railway, opened in 1890, which obscures the relationship of the castle with the village of Aberdour. The Forth estuary is in the background, with the old stone pier in the centre, and the steamer pier at the top left. The oldest part of Aberdour Castle is a 14th-century tower on a rhomboidal plan, which was extended to the east in the 16th and 17th centuries. To the south are the remains of a terraced garden, with a beehive dovecot, and to the east of that is a walled bowling green. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
