Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: 'Place: Edinburgh. Building: Rockville, 5 Napier Road' Photographer: 'G N' Date: 'July 1964' Rockville, an elaborate Victorian house with a five-stage tower, was built in 1858. It was the home of the architect Sir James Gowans (1822-90), and was built using grids of dressed stone infilled with rubble. The house was demolished in 1965. This photograph shows the hall with its encaustic tiled floor and elaborately panelled doors. The walls are panelled and feature Moorish-style stepped decorations. The ceiling features foliate plasterwork ribs and cornice. The first part of the house a Victorian visitor would see was the hall. It would be designed to impress the visitor, and reflect the taste and wealth of the owners. Encaustic tiles set in intricate patterns are commonly used to great effect.
