Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: 'Place: Edinburgh. Building: Rockville, 5 Napier Road' Photographer: 'G N' Date: 'July 1964' Rockville was built in 1858 as the home of its architect Sir James Gowans (1822-90). The structure was built using a grid of dressed stone infilled with rubble and had a tall five-stage tower. The house was demolished in 1965, despite rescue attempts. This photograph shows Rockville from the gardens behind the stables (right). The conservatory which would have been filled with exotic plants, fruits and flowers for use in the house stands to the left. Large houses required various extra buildings such as stables, lodges, laundries, and conservatories to provide working areas for the many servants necessary to keep the owners living in luxury. These would be either hidden or separate from the house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
