Report: 'Thrave, Sanday, Orkney. Desk-based assessment and walkover survey'

MS 7671

Description Report: 'Thrave, Sanday, Orkney. Desk-based assessment and walkover survey'

Date 4/2008

Collection Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA)

Catalogue Number MS 7671

Category Manuscripts

Scope and Content This 16-page report is of a desk-based assessment and a walkover survey for Ms Paula Batey, carried out by ORCA, as part of the planning process, wishing to renovate the property, or if this should not be possible, to build elsewhere on the site, in an unspecified location. Two sites would be potentially affected: a possible 'treb dyke' (large linear earthwork , possibly pre-Norse or even earlier in date), and the steading itself. It was recommended that the treb dyke site be avoided by machinery by cordoning off, if necessary. The steading has been recorded to a certain extent, and it is recommended that the renovation be sympathetic to its traditional build. If it is not to be renovated and a decision taken to construct new buildings on the plot, it is recommended that the old steading is not demolished, certainly not without a full standing building record.
