Scope and Content This 50-page report records the results of an archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey of an area at Palace, Birsay, Orkney, prior to the proposed development of new housing and a car-park. Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) was commissioned by Mr B Cox, Palace Farm, Palace, Birsay, Orkney, to carry out the work, the aim of which was to assess the area by non-intrusive means for the presence of evidence of archaeological remains that might require mitigating action. Eight new houses, with access and services were proposed, also a car-park, on a greenfield site to the north of the ruined Earl's Palace and Palace village. Threats were identified as destruction through ground-breaking works on the site, vibration which might damage delicate artefacts, changes in drainage patterns, and changes in the appearance of the landscape affecting both access and the way in which monuments are experienced. No known archaeological sites or monuments were identified within the proposed development area, excepting the formal gardens associated with the ruined 16th century Earl's Palace and several probably post-medieval buildings demolished between 1881 and 1902. Test pits and geophysical survey were recommended for open areas near the Earl's Palace. A standing buildings survey of Cleatfurrows/Palace Farm might be necessary. There is a high density of significant remains nearby.
