Scope and Content Aerial view of St Cuthbert's Church and manse, Colinton, Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Parish Church, surrounded on all four sides by its churchyard, stands in the valley of the Water of Leith at Colinton village. The present building dates from 1908, but there has been a church on or near this site for over 900 years. The church and its manse lie in an elbow of flat land formed by the river. On the opposite bank above the line of trees, stands the former Colinton House, built for Sir William Forbes 1801-6 and now part of Merchiston Castle School. The ancient name for the church, founded c.1095, and the village which grew up around it, was Hailes. This comes from the old word for 'haugh' or 'the land in a corner formed by a river', a name tailor-made for the curve of the Water of Leith at Colinton. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
