Scope and Content Reid's Close, named after Andrew Reid, a Baillie who owned malt barns to the west of Queensberry House, lies on the south side of the Canongate, leading to Holyrood Road. It opened out into a courtyard which was also accessed via Vallance's Entry (named after Adam Vallance, a barber whose lands were bounded to the west by the Incorporation of Baxters, or Bakers). The original tenements were demolished and redeveloped in 1965 by Ian G Lindsay & Partners. The resulting design incorporated 14 houses and a hall, with a rubble ground floor and harled upper three storeys. The flats are accessed via a staircase on the rear elevation, reached through the pend seen here. This easternmost entry has been partly enclosed with railings (1999-2004) as part of the new Scottish Parliament which occupies Queensberry House, just to the east of this block.
