Scope and Content Reid's Close, named after Andrew Reid, a Baillie who owned malt barns to the west of Queensberry House, lies on the south side of the Canongate, leading to Holyrood Road. It opened out into a courtyard which was also accessed via Vallance's Entry (named after Adam Vallance, a barber whose lands were bounded to the west by the Incorporation of Baxters, or Bakers). The original tenements were demolished and redeveloped in 1965 by Ian G Lindsay & Partners. The resulting design incorporated 14 houses and a hall, with a rubble ground floor and harled upper three storeys. The flats are accessed via the staircase seen here on the rear elevation. The easternmost entry has been partly enclosed with railings (1999-2004) as part of the new Scottish Parliament which occupies Queensberry House, just to the east of this block.
