Scope and Content Motte-and-bailey castle at Garpol Water, Dumfries and Galloway The well-preserved earthworks of a motte-and-bailey castle stand near the Garpol Water. The site occupies a natural hillock and comprises a central oval mound, which supported the wooden castle, and a small bailey (to the left). During the reign of David I (1124-53) many Norman nobles received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as symbols of feudal lordship, as well as fortified residences.
