All Other AL 1 ALBUM NO.1: LEWIS KIDD Hard-backed album with marbled covers, half-calf; red marbled end paper and about 100 white pages watermarked 'I&M 1822' with fleur-di-lis. The first part contains tracings/drawings of furniture and furnishing details almost all pasted in. Then a few black pages, followed by garden designs including one inscribed 'Lewis Kidd, Gordon Castle, 1844' - several drawn straight onto the page. About half unused. Print Room SK 5 SKETCH BOOK 5: Kincardineshire Ancient Monuments Album. Dark cloth-covered hard backed spring binder with embossed border on both front and back, blue marbled end papers and red cloth-covered spring. In a sugar paper folder inside are 171 loose pages, mostly lined and used for hand-written ink descriptions (some buildings extinct, all with location), the remainder plain paper slotted to hold photographs. (OSM for this area was published 1868) Detailed inventory of archaeological and historical sites in Kincardineshire, compiled by Rev. Dr. Barron, Aberfoyle. These are arranged by parish and include a number of snapshots showing: a gravestone erected by George, 5th Earl Marischal, in memory of his daughter, Mary, ob. 14 Oct. 1620; Benholm Tower and the Castle Dovecot; a fragment of a tombstone in Marischal Mausoleum; a doorway and sculptured stones in St. Palladius' Chapel; sculptured stones at the parish church of St James the Great; the Sheriff's Kettle; Inglismaldie Castle; Newdosk churchyard; the wall of the Enceinte, Lauriston Castle, and the Stone of Morphie. Print Room SK 9 SKETCH BOOK 9: M Kirkwood measured sketches album. A grey cardboard-covered Art School sketch book with 30 cartridge paper pages (some unused). The front is titled Measured Sketches, M Kirkwood. Inside there are also notes, tracings, photographs and other detailed drawings. M Kirkwood, School of Architecture, Aberdeen 1948 is written inside the front cover and beneath are two b/w photographs of Delgaty Castle and a swatch of 16 pages of hand-written notes with a few illustrations, titled Further Notes on Tempera painting in Scotland and other discoveries at Delgaty Castle by A W Lyons. These seem to have been written by Kirkwood from an article by Lyons published in PSAS vol 44 1909-10. pp1-12 are full of measured drawings, plans, details , photographs of Delgaty Castle, with tracings of masons’ marks and lettering above fireplace in library; p12v introduces Towie-Barclay Castle, and the next 4 pages are full of plans, elevations, perspectives (all measured) and photographs there. pp 17v/18 contain 5 photographs of carved details in library at Delgaty, and 1 detail of a painted ceiling. p30 - 4are devoted to Kilmorack Parish Church : measured plan, elevations, interior sections and furnishing details by M K; also an envelope addressed to Mrs Kirkwood from the Free Church of Scotland, the Mound, containing a survey by W Glashan in 1973 of the same church, here called Kilmorack West Church. c. 1948 Item Level
Print Room SK 3 SKETCH BOOK 3: DONALD LAMONT POSTCARD ALBUM (c.f.PA 118): album with green board covers decorated with a coloured floral motif containing sixty six pages each printed with a windmill and flowers and slotted to take three postcards. Many of the earlier postcards are unused souvenir cards made in Germany, reproduced from water-colour views of European cities and towns. One view is of "Sheep ranching in Western Canada," and there is one of The Big Tree, Stanley Park, Vancouver with two men in a pony trap. Another shows "The Incarnation Lama" with a note that the card came "from Dr. Graham, our Guild Missionary in India who spoke here recently." There is also one showing "The picturesque track to Olinda Falls, Victoria" Australia. Some photographic views of scenes in Germany are included. There are also postcards sent to the Rev. and Mrs. Lamont at the Manse, Coldingham, Berwickshire. These include views of the suspension bridge, Forres; Millheugh Bridge, Blantyre; Slains Castle; Peterhead; the interior of the orphan's home church, Bridge of Weir; De Quincey Cottage, near Lasswade, and a photograph of a sundial, postmarked Lasswade 1906 on which the message reads "Emily's parents gave me the sundial, A. A. ". Also shown are The Manse, Old Deer; white cattle at Cadzow Forest, Hamilton; Bridge of Don; Coldingham village in 1904; the lake at Pitfour; Inverfarigaig Pier; St Andrews; Inverugie Castle; Loch Katrine; Belfield House, Kilmarnock, 1905; Calton Hill, Edinburgh; Parish church Bothwell; Crieff Hydropathic; Tomintoul; Brig o' Doon tea gardens, Alloway; the Tweed, Peebles; the Monastery, Fort Augustus; the entrance to Glen Nevis, Fort William; Helmsdale and Gartymore; the Parish church, Bowmore; Peebles from south; the Parish church, St Andrews; the King and Duke of Connaught at the Royal Review 18th September, 1905; Lasswade church; Lovers' Walk, Ayr; Girvan harbour; Lady Jean's cottage, Newbattle, with a note that it "had nine nice windows!". c. 1900 Item Level
