Description Commercial Buildings
Collection Philip William Sayer
Catalogue Number 551 263/4
Category All Other
Scope and Content Thomson's commercial buildings are located in the centre of Glasgow. His earliest design for a warehouse is represented here in unexecuted drawings of 1851 for John Blair. Other warehouses from this decade are those in West Nile Street (1858) and in Gordon Street, which was built in 1858-9, burnt in 1864, but rebuilt by Thomson. The Cairney Building of 1860-1 is now demolished, but represented here by a photograph from 'The Building Times' and a photograph of Thomson's drawing. Also of this decade are the Buck's Head (1863-c1868) and the Grecian building 1867-8). Later warehouses are the Egyptian Halls (1872) and the posthumous Watson Street warehouse (1876). The office in West Regent Stree and Wellington Street was occupied temporarily by Thomson himself while he altered and extended it for Murdoch and Rodger, writers, in 1872.
