Scope and Content The original 'Rothesay Academy and Thomson's Institute' was established in 1867 by the local Free Churches. This first building, designed in a Gothic Revival style by local architect, and later town Provost (1887-9), John Russell Thomson (1843-1910), opened in 1870. With a rising population in the town, additions were built in 1910 and 1938. The original school was burnt down in March 1954, and the current building was constructed on the site. Designed by architects David Harvey (1908-75) and Alexander Scott (1920-2005) and built 1956-9, the Academy is a fine example of the modernist style of the time. The L-plan block comprises three- and four-storeyed wings supported on concrete columns. The single-storeyed block in the foreground with an interesting concave elevation, is the administration block. The building is constructed from a concrete frame with pre-cast concrete walls and some granite and sandstone facings. The majority of the classroom wings and staircases are glazed with plastic infill panels between each floor. The building's significance is noted by its B-list status. However, the 1950s block, along with the earlier 20th century buildings have now been vacated as a new campus facility was built in 2007 on the southern edge of the town to provide the town's primary, secondary and tertiary education.
