Description Engraving of Lochleven Castle showing a square centre tower & surrounding walls Titled 'Loch-Leven. The Castle, of which this View is given, is built on a small island, situated almost in the middle of Loch-Leven. By whom, or at what period , it was erected, is not known. In the reign of King Robert III a grant was made of it from the crown to Douglas laird of Lock-leven [sic.] This island is famous for being the place of captivity of Mary Queen of Scots; and the ruins of a small building are shewn as her prison. Besides this, there are the remains of a chapel, and a square tower, consisting of a dungeon, and three stories of apartments above, the whole encompassed with a wall.' [Adam de Cardonnell "Picturesque Antiquities of Scotland," 1788.]
