Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Greenock docks, Inverclyde Titled 'Greenock-East', this photograph shows the docks and shipyards of Greenock. The Garvel Graving Dock is visible on the extreme left of this photograph. To the right, Greenock docks and railway marshalling yards are noted as 'Dock u. Hafenanlager'. At the extreme right of the photograph are the Glen and Kingston shipyards, annotated as B. Immediately adjacent is Greenock gasworks, annotated as C. Detailed intelligence notes were provided, identifying various buildings and structures within each of these sites. Although the Luftwaffe flew intelligence-gathering sorties throughout the war, the majority were flown in 1939 and 1940. In addition, the German national airline, Lufthansa, covertly took photographs across Britain in the years before the war while ostensibly surveying new routes for flights. Aerial reconnaissance photographs were used by Luftwaffe intelligence officers to identify new targets for bombing sorties, to assess the damage caused by earlier raids and to gather information about the strength of defences. Greenock was photographed by the Luftwaffe in October 1939 during an extensive aerial reconnaissance operation conducted in the first months of the war. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
