Scope and Content This report (54 pages, with 28 additional pages including 10 larger folded pages of maps, diagrams, photographs and colour plates) gives the results of archaeological fieldwork carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd with the Clyne Heritage Society over ten days between October and November 2005 at Brora Back Beach, Sutherland. A project design for the fieldwork was produced by CFA Archaeology in consultation with the SCAPE Trust. The fieldwork was commissioned by the SCAPE Trust. This area has been the focus of a private study by one of the authors, Jacqueline Aitken, leading to the identification of several archaeological feaures of interest. Historical research has shown evidence of extractive industries including coal mining and salt production. A pilot project in 2004 led to this survey with the Clyne Heritage Society in 2005. Some sites were being actively eroded. A preliminary walk-over and a topographical survey were undertaken. Recording and photography were carried out, within areas excavated and evaluated by volunteers. The remains of a substantial stone wall over 30m in length were examined and exposed, but its true extent and nature were not determined. Recommendations included a geophysical survey, a follow-up survey of another eroding structure, and sandbag protection together with weekly then monthly monitoring.
