Scope and Content Aerial view of Crail, Fife Crail was created a royal burgh in 1310, with a royal castle just to the east of the burgh. Fishing was the main industry in the town throughout its history, but this declined during the 19th century, and the town now relies on tourism. This is an aerial view of the town which developed around three medieval streets which still exist today relatively untouched. High Street and Marketgate run through the centre of the town, while Nethergate runs parallel to the shore. In the centre of the image is the Tolbooth which was built in the 16th century. In 1776 the tower was altered when two storeys and a malt-kiln-style roof were added and in 1814 a town hall was added to the east. Both are now in use as a visitor centre.
