Term Note
EXCHANGE A multi-purpose commercial building, used primarily as a trading place for merchants, but also incorporating shops, public offices, guildhalls, etc.
HALL A large building or room used for a specific function. If not domestic, use specific term, e.g. VILLAGE HALL.
MARKET HALL A purpose built covered market hall, usually 19th century.
MARKET HOUSE A market building, pre-19th century, incorporating other function rooms, e.g. theatres, courtrooms, schoolrooms.
