(NX 7079 5018) Earthwork (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

This homestead moat (RCAHMS TS., visited 1951) has been much ploughed out; it was excavated in 1947 when it was shown to have been roughly rectangular in shape, measuring 98' NE-SW, NE side 122', SW side 154' over a c.34' wide ditch, which had a slight upcast bank on either lip. No dateable finds were made. It is best preserved at the NW angle.

W A Anderson 1948; RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911

A homestead moat situated near the edge of a level ridge. Generally as described, it is best preserved in the NW where the inner scarp of the ditch is 1.0m high; elsewhere only slight scarps delimit the ditch. Resurveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (DWR) 10 February 1972

This site is listed in an Atlas of Scottish History (McNeill and MacQueen 1996) as a moated site.

Information from RCAHMS (DE) September 1997.

Activities

Field Visit (2 October 1951)

This site was included within the RCAHMS Marginal Land Survey (1950-1962), an unpublished rescue project. Site descriptions, organised by county, are available to view online - see the searchable PDF in 'Digital Items'. These vary from short notes, to lengthy and full descriptions. Contemporary plane-table surveys and inked drawings, where available, can be viewed online in most cases - see 'Digital Images'. The original typecripts, notebooks and drawings can also be viewed in the RCAHMS search room.

Information from RCAHMS (GFG) 19 July 2013.

Field Visit (1996 - 2003)

Russell Coleman managed an Historic Scotland funded project to record medieval moated sites in Scotland. Gazetteers were produced for each regional council area between 1996 and 2002 with an uncompleted overall review in 2002-03. The results of the first year of the project were published in Tayside and Fife Archaeological Journal, Volume 3 (1997).
