Archaeology Notes

NX13NW 25 14374 35808

NX 143 359. The 8' - 10' wide ditch of a circular enclosure, 100' in diameter, on the W side of Cass Burn, 600 yds NE of Cairngarroch, is visible on APs (106G/Scot/UK 89: 3115-6). At the time of visit, when

the site was in pasture, the greater part of the circuit of the ditch was revealed by a belt of clover growing in the filling.

RCAHMS TS 9 July 1953

NX 1438 3580. There is no trace of this enclosure on the ground.

Site surveyed at 1:2500 from APs.

Visited by OS (DWR) 31 January 1972

Vertical air photographs have revealed the site of an oval enclosure 550m NE of Cairngarroch farmhouse. The enclosure is situated on a low rise flanked by shallow gullies on the SE and W; at the date of visit the field was under pasture, but the position of the ditch was indicated by a 2.4m broad green band in the parched grass. The interior measures 31m from NE to SW by 29m transversely and a 5m wide gap in the green mark on the ENE may indicate the entrance.
