At Claddyburn, a breakwater was built to form a large pond enclosing the piles for the construction of the lighterage wharf, and two further breakwaters for the springing-off point. A short isolated rail system was laid, to connect the timber pond and the quay breakwaters.
In association with this work a transit shed and several railway sidings were constructed in an area adjacent to the quay.
M Christensen 1995 (two parts)
The breakwaters and quay have now been converted to a vehicular ferry port for Ro-Ro ferries to Northern Ireland. A link-span has been installed on the S side and much of the area to the N has been made into a car park..
