Lifeboat House [NAT]

OS 1:2500 map, 1973.

Formerly entered as Portpatrick Harbour, Lifeboat Shed.

For crane (probably associated with this lifboat shed) at NW 99783 54163, see NW95SE 9.03.

A lifeboat house was constructed on the N pier in 1877, with doors at the S end. Initially, the boat was moved on rollers out of the lifeboat and craned into the water. Following a serious accident involving the crane (on 19 December 1899) the lifeboat was kept afloat in winter until a new crane was built (in 1907); a door was made in the N end of the house in the same year. The boat has been kept afloat since 1927; this crane and the associated trolley-rails were removed for scrap in 1940. The boathouse was extended and its facilities improved in 1992-3.
