Scope and Content Portpatrick Harbour, Wigtownshire This harbour was constructed as the Scottish end of a ferry service to Donaghadee in Northern Ireland. The earliest major works were designed by John Rennie, and built between 1820 1nd 1836. A railway-linked basin was added in 1857-63. This view shows the entrance to the basin, with part of Rennie's harbour works in the left background, and the lifeboat shed beyond. Portpatrick is on a very exposed coast, and did not prove a satisfactory packet station. It was supplanted by Stranraer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
