Hostels for the accommodation of the large numbers of pilgrims visiting Our Lady's Well (NT58SE 30) were built at Whitekirk (NT 595 814) by James I about 1430. Stone from them was used in the construction of the tower built by Oliver Sinclair about 1540 (see NT58SE 12).
