Archaeology Notes

NT12NW 47 1238 2998

A scooped settlement measuring 150' by 100' internally, is situated on the lower NW slopes of Craig Head. The enclosing wall, originally about 8' thick, appears on the NW and SW as a stony bank spread to a width of 12', but it is otherwise represented only by several facing stones. The entrance is on the W. The lower part of the settlement contains two excavated courts, divided by a passage aligned with the settlement entrance. A depression in the S court is probably modern. The upper part of the settlement contains a row of four house-platforms separated by an unexcavated ridge.

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1956.

Generally as described. The scooped settlement contains only three positive house platforms.

Visited by OS (RDL) 16 March 1964; (IA) 5 September 1972.

Activities

Field Visit (July 1989)

This settlement is much as described in the Inventory (RCAHMS 1967), but the plan omits what appears to be the enclosing wall of the settlement on the S.

Visited by RCAHMS (SPH) July 1989.

Sbc Note

Visibility: This is an upstanding earthwork or monument.
