Archaeology Notes

NS79SE 42 7968 9301.

An old chapel called St Ringan's (Ninian's) Chapel stood near the well (St Ninian's Well - NS79SE 33). It comes before us in the records as being the place where those who died of the plague in 1645 were buried - "and the burial of those that dyes of the plaige to be at the Chapel Well". (St Ninian's Well NS 7968 9301)

J Ronald 1899

The Exchequer Rolls of April 1497 record the King's offering "in Saint Ringan's Chapel, besid Strivelin (Stirling)" and another on the same day for "a hental of messes of Saint Ringan".

J S Fleming 1898

There is a possibility that St Ninian's Well (NS79SE 33) and St Ninian's Chapel were both at the same site, but the evidence for this is not conclusive.

Stirling, St Ringan's Chapel NS c. 796 930 NS79SE 42

This chapel was in existence by 1497 although no trace of it now survives. It apparently stood close to St Ninian's Well, but there is no reason to believe that the building covering the well contains parts of the chapel or that it is anything other than a wash-house.
