Archaeology Notes

NS79SE 10 7909 9435

The Roman road running from the Antonine Wall to Strathmore (RR 9a) crossed the River Forth in the neighbourhood of Stirling, and it may be regarded as certain that a fort would be established here to guard the crossing, and to provide an intermediate staging-point in the 22 mile stretch between Camelon and Ardoch. No remains of a fort are visible, and its site has not been located. The traces of a "Roman station" referred to by Maitland (1757) are probably the earthwork on the SE side of the King's Knot (NS79SE 7), which is clearly not of Roman origin.

The inscription (at NS 7909 9435) on Gowan Hill, once considered to be Roman, is a forgery.
