Eldon Street Bridge [NAT]

Eldon Steet Bridge, Eldon Street, opened June 1895. A cast-iron arch bridge, with six ribs. The spandrels of the puter ribs are filled with Gothic tracery and carry the arms of Glasgow. The parapet is also of cast iron, with panels of tracery.
This bridge is similar in style to the Kelvin Bridge (NS56NE 1035).

Gibson Steet - Eldon Street Bridge: this road bridge was opened in 1895 at the joint expense of Glasgow and Partick, by engineers Formans & McCall. The main arch is segmental, about 21m (70ft) span; width between parapets is 20m (65ft). Parapets and fascias are of cast iron decorated in the style of the earlier Partick and Great Western Bridges [NS56NE 1080 and NS56NE 1035 respectively], and painted bottle green; the seven arch ribs behind the fascias are of rivetted steelwork.

Eldon Street Bridge: this bridge was constructed jointly by the Caledonian Rly and Glasgow Corporation to replace the King's Bridge (NS56NE 4882) at the North entrance to Kelvingrove Park (NS56NE 328). It has an interesting hybrid construction of arched rivetted steel trusses internally, but with the outermost arches in cast-iron. These are infilled with Gothic tracery and decorated with the Arms of Glasgow.

This bridge carries Eldon Street across the River Kelvin at the North gate of Kelvingrove Park (NS56NE 328). The river here forms the boundary between the parishes of Govan (to the W) and Glasgow (to the E).
The location cited defines the centre of the structure. The available map evidence indicates that it extends from NS c. 57345 66697 to NS c. 57367 66687.
