Scope and Content Eldon Street Bridge, Eldon Street, Glasgow This bridge was opened in 1895, and was designed by Formans & McCall. Its construction was triggered by the building of the Glasgow Central Railway, which passed under Eldon Street immediately to the east. The new bridge carried a double horse-tram track. This shows the single span of the bridge from the south-west. The outer faces of the bridge, including the parapets, are of cast iron, but the arched girders carrying the carriageway are of riveted steel. The railway is in a tunnel to the right. This bridge was one of three over the Kelvin with a family resemblance, the others being Partick Bridge, built in 1877-78 and Kelvin Bridge, Great Western Road, opened in 1891. This one differed in having riveted steel internal girders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
