Archaeology Notes

NR 9990 7057 Site 161 Glenvoidean

On the hillside beyond the north end of the north wood of Lenihuline are the remains of this butt. In a well defined stone-walled enclosure are the ruins of two rectangular houses of dry stone build and a well preserved corn kiln. A former butt of Lenihuline, noted by Roy, the site was probably deserted c1830. This site shares with Kingavin (NS05SE 17) the unusual arrangement of being enclosed within a single large yard.

Proudfoot and Hannah 2000

NR 9990 7057 Farmstead remains: Located on hillside above Kilmichael Cottage, just outside N edge of North Wood of Lenihuline. There are 2 rectangular buildings, one 15.2 x 5.4m and other 9 x 5m with 3 x 4m extension on upper end, and a well-preserved corn kiln, in a well-defined enclosure c. 30 x 40m. A former butt of Lenihuline.

Field Visit (31 March 2009)

This farmstead, which is situated in moorland 840m E of Kilmichael Cottage, comprises two buildings, a corn-drying kiln and an enclosure. The buildings are generally as previously described, comprising faced rubble walls and there are outshots at the N end of both buildings. A wet hollow between the two may have served as a midden-pit. The corn-drying kiln is situated 20m NW of the buildings and its interior has recently been cleared of debris.

The farmstead is depicted on a late-18th century estate map (Foulis 1758-9: RHP14107/68), which shows two buildings and an enclosure within a parcel of land annotated 'Butinodie'. This small piece of ground lies on the boundary between Kilmichael and Lenihuline farms. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire and Buteshire 1869, Sheet CXCIII) depicts two unroofed buildings immediately to the E of a small enclosure.

Visited by RCAHMS (AGCH, GB) 31 March 2009.
