(Montrose 1 ('inner light'): location cited as NO 718 570). On shore E of entrance to former wet dock: 1818. Five-storey harled circular section masonry tower, tapering to gallery on cast-iron ring. Octagonal lantern with ogee roof rising to ball finial. Glazing on two seaward sides, round light shows up river. Tapering metal tower, with large triangular-paned lantern, domed top and lantern.

This beacon forms a pair of leading lights with the outer light (NO75NW 44.11), defining the S side of the channel of the River South Esk.
