Montrose, Western Leading Light General View

SC 504439

Description Montrose, Western Leading Light General View

Date 18/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 504439

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lighthouse/ Western Leading light, Montrose Harbour, Angus This is the survivor of a pair of lighthouses to guide vessels on the short but tricky passage up the river South Esk to the port of Montrose. They may have been designed by Robert Stevenson. This view shows the lighthouse from the south east. It is a simple but pleasing design, with an ogee-topped octagonal lantern, smaller than, but similar in style to the lanterns designed by Robert Stevenson for the Northern Lighthouse Board. The other lighthouse of the pair was nearer to the river mouth, and has been almost completely demolished, only a few courses remaining. It has been replaced by a modern steel-framed structure.
